Motivating An Entire City
by Julie Bartkus
Robert Orr of Lowell, Massachusetts, has the answer to this question.
When I met Robert several years ago he was working towards a very important goal. He was preparing to lead a team of fifteen in the Boston to New York AIDS ride (274 miles over three days).
He has done so much more than to pull a team together and say "hey let's ride!" He's taken this cause to heart and has raised $40,000 to help find a cure for AIDS with help from his team and community.
Robert is a successful business owner and sincerely believes that when something good happens to you, you should give a little back. He knows how important it is to have positive support in one's life. He encountered many struggles on his journey to success and is very grateful to those who have encouraged and believed in him. One person who helped him to turn his life around was a teacher who believed in him when he didn't believe in himself. It doesn't take a whole lot to make a lasting positive impact in someone else's life.
"One person can make a difference and everyone should try."
John F. Kennedy
So how do you motivate others to help you accomplish a goal? Listed below is Robert's strategy that has gotten him fabulous results.
Start talking about your goals to everyone you meet.
Have a strong belief in what you're doing. If you believe you can fly, and soar to new heights -- you can.
Tell people what's in it for them. Robert said that working towards this goal has been a life changing experience for the people who got involved.
Develop a plan of action.
Don't let obstacles get you down.
Build positive support to help keep yourself motivated.
Make it a fun time for everyone. People are attracted to people who are having fun. He believes that we should all laugh a lot. Robert sings to his customers, and they love it! His attitude is contagious. He lifts people up, and they respond positively. He saves the variety of smiley faces that his customers and staff give him.
Feed yourself positive messages through motivational tapes.
Don't force feed people information. "Leave the ball in their court -- if they start bouncing it, pass it back and forth."
When things get down that's when we should get our highest and try to bring everyone up with us.
Appreciate your team.
Exercise and stay energized.
Believe in yourself. Adopt a "not a doubt in my mind" attitude.
Don't let opportunity pass you by! If you've been thinking about doing something in your life -- take action!
Robert believes that we should all work to maximize our inner ability. We're all capable of so much! When you project a good life and energy for yourself, you can do just about anything!
